What is SSR?
Surgical Sperm Retrieval (SSR) is a specialized fertility procedure designed for men who have little or no sperm in their ejaculate due to medical conditions or blockages. The procedure involves retrieving sperm directly from the testes or epididymis using minimally invasive surgical techniques. Retrieved sperm can then be used in assisted reproductive procedures such as ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) to achieve fertilization. At IRA IVF Center, we employ advanced SSR techniques to provide couples the opportunity to conceive when natural conception is not possible.
Who Needs SSR?
SSR is recommended for men facing conditions such as:
Azoospermia (absence of sperm in semen)
Blockages in the reproductive tract due to congenital issues, infection, or surgery
Obstructive conditions after vasectomy or trauma
Non-obstructive azoospermia with limited sperm production in the testes
Couples who have failed IVF or IUI due to male factor infertility
Benefits of SSR
Enables biological parenthood: Allows men with severe infertility to contribute genetically to their child.
High success with ICSI: Directly retrieved sperm can be used immediately for fertilization through ICSI.
Minimally invasive techniques: Modern SSR procedures minimize discomfort, complications, and recovery time.
Preservation of fertility: Sperm can be retrieved and cryopreserved for future IVF or ICSI cycles.
Personalized care: Each procedure is tailored to the patient’s specific condition and fertility goals.
The SSR Process
Evaluation & Planning: Comprehensive assessment of male fertility, medical history, and testicular function.
Surgical Retrieval: Depending on the condition, techniques like Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE), Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA), or Micro-TESE are used to collect sperm.
Laboratory Processing: Retrieved sperm are examined, prepared, and sometimes frozen for future use.
Assisted Fertilization: Sperm are used in procedures like ICSI to fertilize eggs retrieved from the female partner.
Follow-up & Support: Patients receive post-procedure care and counseling to optimize fertility outcomes.
