What is ICSI?
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a highly specialized form of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) designed to treat severe male infertility. In this advanced procedure, a single healthy sperm is carefully selected and injected directly into the egg under a microscope. This helps overcome fertilization barriers that may not be possible with conventional IVF, offering couples a higher chance of success.
Who Needs ICSI?
ICSI is recommended for couples who face specific male or fertilization-related infertility challenges, such as:
Very low sperm count or poor sperm motility
Abnormally shaped sperm (poor morphology)
Previous failed or poor fertilization with standard IVF
Blockages preventing sperm release
Use of surgically retrieved sperm (SSR techniques like TESA, PESA, or Micro-TESE)
Couples using frozen eggs or sperm, where fertilization chances are reduced
Cases of unexplained infertility when other methods have failed
Benefits of ICSI
Overcomes severe male infertility: Even a single healthy sperm is enough for fertilization.
High fertilization rate: Ensures that eggs are directly fertilized, improving success chances.
Helps after IVF failure: Provides hope for couples who have not achieved fertilization in standard IVF.
Use of frozen gametes: Works effectively with frozen eggs or sperm.
Supports genetic testing: Embryos created through ICSI can undergo advanced genetic screening if required.
The ICSI Process
Ovarian Stimulation & Egg Retrieval: The woman’s ovaries are stimulated to produce eggs, which are collected through a minor procedure.
Sperm Selection: The healthiest and most active sperm are carefully chosen under high magnification.
Sperm Injection: A single sperm is injected directly into each mature egg using micromanipulation tools.
Embryo Culture: The fertilized eggs (embryos) are monitored in the laboratory for growth and quality.
Embryo Transfer: The best-quality embryo is placed into the uterus for implantation.
Pregnancy Confirmation: After two weeks, a test confirms whether the procedure has been successful.
